Awards history

The Premier’s Sustainability Awards acknowledge leadership, innovation and outstanding achievement of those who become sustainable in their use of Victoria’s resources. The Awards are in their ninth year, with Sustainability Victoria managing the awards on behalf of the Premier since 2007.

Management structure

The Premier’s Sustainability Awards are managed by Sustainability Victoria on behalf of the Premier of Victoria. 2011 award entries and judging are managed by Arup.

Lead | Create | Innovate

This year’s theme is Lead | Create | Innovate. It highlights the role leadership, creativity and innovation plays in forging a future of sustainable energy and resource use for Victoria.

Award Categories

There are eight award categories, and one special recognition award. Each award category is described below, including some category-specific eligibility criteria. Further eligibility details can be found below.

Large Business

This category recognises the achievements of large businesses in adopting and implementing sustainability principles to reduce their environmental impact. A large business is defined as an organisation employing 100 or more employees.

Small Business

This category recognises the achievements of small businesses in adopting and implementing sustainability principles to reduce their environmental impact. A small business is defined as a Victorian organisation employing less than 100 employees.

Products or Services Award

This category recognises commercialised products and/or services that reduce environmental impacts over their total lifecycle.

Community

This category recognises leadership and commitment by a Victorian individual, community group or school to protect and enhance the environment.

Built Environment

This category recognises projects in the built environment that contribute to sustainability through innovation in materials, development methods, infrastructure or new technology. Eligible projects include new or renovated mixed-use developments, infrastructure, built form, systems and technologies that relate to the built environment.

Tertiary Education

This category recognises universities, TAFE’s and higher education institutions that develop and deliver educational programs and institutional practices contributing to a more sustainable Victoria.

State Government

This category recognises the development and implementation of environmentally sustainable initiatives by Victorian-based state government departments, agencies and authorities.

Local Government

This category recognises the development and implementation of environmentally sustainable policies, projects and programs at a Victorian municipal or shire level.

There is one final award, selected from the winners of the eight award categories by the Premier of Victoria.

Premier’s Recognition Award

The Premier’s Recognition Award is presented to an organisation that has shown particular determination in overcoming difficult obstacles, showcasing exemplary leadership and innovation in sustainability.
