Caulfield to Dandenong Level Crossing Removal Project

The Caulfield to Dandenong level crossing removal project is a large-scale upgrade to one of Melbourne’s busiest rail corridors and involves the construction of five new stations as well as nine level crossing removals. It is a massive program to ease traffic congestion on Melbourne roads through the removal of rail crossings and is also providing linear parkland to local communities.

The innovative elevated rail design will transform the previous brownfield rail corridor into 22.5 hectares of new linear park beneath the structure, and embraces holistic sustainability from design through to construction and operation. The material use and reuse has seen the project set exceptionally high standards for waste and emissions reduction.

This is also the largest re-giving of land in Melbourne since the opening of the Botanic Gardens and provides significant opportunity to maximise ecological outcomes and reconnect communities. Previously communities along the corridor have long been split in half by the rail but, with the creation of the linear park and a redeveloped station precinct, the suburbs will be reconnected.

The Caulfield to Dandenong level crossing removal project demonstrates that investment and innovation in infrastructure can provide benefits well beyond standards for rail upgrade projects. It has demonstrated an approach that completely transforms, reimagines and connects rail infrastructure and community, and creates holistic sustainability outcomes.
